During paddling season, we see each other at least three times a week, but we rarely have a chance to learn of the talents many of our teammates possess outside of paddling. This is the first in a series of member profiles for Ke Kioea.

Hutch Hutchinson has been known to;
a) Play tenor saxophone
b) Enjoy rugby
c) Hold a very impressive military career
d) Create dazzling art
e) Try all of the above.

Although you may have already heard that Hutch Hutchinson is an accomplished artist, you may not have been able to see his work or learn about his unique artistic process. Well now you can. Here is an excerpt from his profile that can be found at his website . And you can see even more of his work here. The dude is prolific.

Hutch’s Artwork:

Hutch’s passion for art dates back to his childhood. Over the years Hutch has explored working in pencil as well as with pen and ink. His current direction is based on what he calls his “doodles”, as well as his desire to create an art style which is unique both visually, and in the way the viewer is drawn into interacting with and interpreting each work in his or her way. Hutch digitizes his pencil drawings and sketches to serve as the bottom layer and foundation to the work he is creating. He then digitally paints and builds successive layers of elements upon it. Rather than concentrate on depicting accurate or ‘real’ objects, Hutch, through the juxtaposition of colorful, textured puzzle-piece shapes, instead tries to create and evoke a certain feeling or mood in his work (e.g. calm, motion, etc.) enabling the eye to explore and discover a variety of images limited only by the viewer’s imagination. Hutch considers the creative process to his work complete after it is printed on fine quality canvas or archival quality art papers.

Whether simple or complex in composition, the arrangement and flow of colorful abstract shapes complimented by the use of texture and shadow, serve to offer the viewer an opportunity to experience a unique art style reflecting the multi-cultural heritage and experiences of the artist.

Why: Uncle Nappy will talk about the what-every-paddler-needs-to-know basics, like technique, form and parts of the canoe. Bring running shoes to start cross-training and tell friends you want to recruit.
